Hinges

I was very disappointed with the hinges I purchased for this cabinet. They were poorly made and I will try and investigate where else to purchase better quality hardware. Such a shame.

Coral effect

I don't think I would have carved through the sheoak veneer if I hadn't wanted to. It's surprising how far you can carve and not break through.
When I carved through I then embellished with my coral form using a Osada Success 40 with 2mm and 0.6 mm grinding burrs.
(Osada Success 40 is quiet with no vibration, compared to a dremel) Not cheap but well worth the money when you are embellishing a lot.
I only carved through the sheoak skin on the larger sections as it would not have looked right. It was all random.

Drawing & carving

I drew the pattern on a piece of paper then used carbon paper to transfer this pattern onto the doors and draws. Remembering there will be gaps around the drawers and doors.
I carved the doors first then the drawers using a mini carver with a lancelot tool attached.
 Mini carver with lancelot tool
I wanted the peaks to be abrupt so you could see the form and shape.  The curves slope up right from the bottom to the top, this is so the peaks catch the light.

Outside skin

The board was not all the same grain pattern, one end was very loud/busy, probably 1/3 rd of the board. I put the busy end where the draws where and the quieter end where the doors where going. This seem to work.

Vaneers

I sanded down some pine veneers from 3mm to 1.8mm then glued 5 veneers together. These I placed on a former I'd made from MDF and stuck them in a vacuum bag.
I ended up with three pieces, two for the doors and one piece for the drawers. I skinned them with 4mm of sheoak on either side, this gave me 20mm thick doors. The veneers inside the doors/drawers  gave me the extra strength I needed when I carved the outside,  I de-stress the outside so that moves.
The doors have not moved since carving

Drawers

Jigs had to be made so I could make the grooves in the back of the drawers.
Nothing was flat, everything was curved.
